Chapeau, Garry! That's a lifetime's worth of pics for most folks' lifetimes.. but I guess that people like us make more time for stuff like this :-) A great selection of some truly evocative pics. I'm glad to say I recognise a fair few, mostly those in Scotland and County Cork.. good choices!

The castle you can't recognise on its own little island á la Eilean Donan is Castle Stalker, off Appin in Loch Linnhe (the continuation of the Firth of Lorn), just up from Lismore. (For those of you who don't recognise this - it's between Oban and Fort William, a bit south of where Glencoe meets the sea.) This is in fact the castle Monty Python used in Holy Grail - it's far more isolated than Eilean Donan, which though on an island, is so close to the 'shore' that a small bridge connects it to dry land. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Stalker for more about the place!

Cheers for giving me a bit more of the bug to visit more of the world by bike. Next stop Alps, I reckon..

Hi Mick! Good to hear from you and that you are alive and well.. ish.. and you're right, an injury in somewhere seemingly insignificant can take on a life out of all proportion.. think about a splinter, a sting or a stubbed toe and you'll see my point.. but I truly cringed when I read about your trapped finger, and more so when I saw your pic. Hopefully, once it stops giving you hell every time you brush past curtains, cushions and candyfloss - and you can actually RIDE again - you'll be doing so with a hunger and fervour which surprises you, energises you, and fully belies your wimpish exterior.
Get well soon again Mick. Good to hear from you!

I was 12 or 13 then & went up on my own probably the weekend after, I knew the moor well then. It was an eiry sight, I don't remember much wind, the middle fuselage section was shattered & the fabric & other flexible stuff was just flapping about a bit...........I went up a couple more times after that but it was the quiet of the first visit, the hostile landscape & weather & knowing that it had carried humans to that spot which was striking.

There was one cop there as I remember to try & stop souveniers being taken, I got a bit of metal & what seem be part of a pair of mens pants, I nearly got a wooden stake through my heart when I took into the house. Nice photos thanks.

Hi Mary,
Sorry, been off the C7 circuit for a while .....

I think you may have forgotten a bit of advice I gave you.

If the gear cables run RH to rear and LH to front as per the instructions, the gear cable outers rub on the head tube as they curve, and wear the paintwork.

It is better to run the RH to rear cable down the LEFT HAND side of the down tube, and the LH to front down the RIGHT HAND side. This makes a cross of the gear cable inners underneath the down tube but it doesn't matter. What it does do, is splay the gear outers wider at the front so they don't sit against the head tube.

It's a great little dodge, and well worth the trouble. Don't think you have to do much from where you are now. Just undo the inners from the mechs, swap the cables from one side to the other, and re-lace through the down tube adjusters but cross the inners before you go under the BB to the mechs.

Hope that makes sense!

Regards,
Mick.

Thanks guys for your sympathies.

I was out today in the chilly westerly wind this morning. I was actually in pain for a while as my finger was exposed to the cold and the roughness of the road. After changing direction and finding a few hills, I warmed up and my finger felt better - thank goodness!

Yes, true. Little fingers are unimportant in the grand scale of things, but painful out of all proportion!

Advert for a Mercian eh?
I wonder if the boys in Derby would give me a back-hander?

Hilary wrote
Your Mercian is the only bike that makes mine seem slightly grubby!!

I thought the photo was an advert :) .

Garry mentioned previously that Cornwall is devilish. It is faster to walk up a 1-in-3 hill than pedal in my books.

That's a nasty wound. Hopefully it won't be painful for too much longer.

Yes indeed, that looks horrible. People tend to think of cycling as just a matter for the legs but fingers are pretty important too!
